Casino Essentials Week 3

This week at Casino Essential brought on some new challenges as well as variety of different types of assignments. To begin with, I was given the task of trying to figure out how questions could be entered into Lectora using EXCEL making it easier to have them entered into the question bank. I was able to figure it out making it a much easier process the company. This way you can create questions slides directly from EXCEL spreadsheets. This was an important step as a client wanted to import 500 or so questions for a particular set of lessons.

I also created a treatment (EDTEC 561) for a module. The called it a script, but since it was narrated it comes out looking more like a treatment. I also wound up doing research on government websites to find federal regulations for OSHA (EDTEC 690). This turned out to be more difficult than I first imagined. Some government websites especially OSHA make it difficult to find specific information. The codes they use to organize their regulations are a real challenge.

In addition, I began building a unit in Captivate and repairing some broken modules. This was a great experience in that it relevant to meeting the needs of the client. It was a very busy week, but everything came together very well.

Until next time,

Tom

Week 2 Casino Esentials

I only worked one day this week so my post will be a bit brief. Next week I will begin working full time throughout the summer.
This week I worked primarily in Lectora repairing and upgrading course materiel. Lectora is very similar to Captivate in the way assets on a page are displayed and defined. One big advantage of Lectora is the ability to publish without the need of plug-ins thereby helping ensure that the lesson is usable by the end user no matter what software package they may be using at the other end.
Since this is a small company the SME does interact with the clients. Last week she walked a client through the online courses using a program called go to meeting. This allows the user to follow a guided tour of the product and interact directly with the software while someone familiar with the product answers questions and demonstrates the ability of the learning modules. I was also given access to Lectora training module that I have been studying throughout the week.
This week will be busy and I am looking forward to creating a new course!

HOME

For my internship I will be working at Casino Essentials. This company provides training for employees specific to the gaming industry. I will be working closely with the SME to develop and implement online training courses. I will be working with software packages that include but are not limited to Lectora, Photoshop, Captivate, Articulate as well as other publishing software. I will also be using Learning Management Systems and resolving client issues as they arise.

I started this week and was able to get an insight on how varied instructional design can be. I was also able to use many of the tools that I have learned in the EDTEC program. My first assignment was to correct and update a lesson using Lectora, which I had never used before. It turned out to be pretty straight forward and was easy to publish to SCORM standards (EDTEC 671). I also was able to make some of the content more readable and visually compelling (EDTEC 640).

One of the best experiences came on my second day. I was able to virtually attend a meeting with the SME and a client. The SME was able to walk the client through the e-learning process and explain how easy it was to use the LMS and incorporate new learning into an existing management structure. She was able to explain the benefits to the employees and how it helps administrators collect and maintain data. She also gave examples of data collection and different methods of delivery to the client (EDTEC 690).

So far, everything seems to be going very well!
